Technology
Coresonic’s LeoCore technology is the only programmable architecture available today that is specifically optimized for use in wireless products. LeoCore has a unique patented architecture optimized for baseband processing; it provides the flexible, programmable solution needed to support 4G and multiple radio standards, and achieves this with the power and space efficiency of a hardwired solution.
Its breakthrough single instruction multiple tasks (SIMT) processor allows parallel processing using a single instruction flow – eliminating the need for multiple DSP’s for supporting multiple standards.
LeoCore breakthroughs
Our LeoCore processor incorporates a number of breakthroughs in programmable baseband processing that directly address the need for flexibility whilst driving power efficient performance and minimizing implementation time and cost.

System block diagram
- An instruction set optimized for baseband processing tasks – resulting in significantly reduced firmware code size, even for complex standards.
- SIMT processor architecture which achieves the performance of a VLIW architecture but with lower control overhead and much lower program and memory usage.
- Hardware acceleration of carefully selected operations, achieving very efficient execution of operations not suitable for software implementation, but retaining enough flexibility to allow hardware reuse between standards.
- An innovative interconnect scheme and memory architecture, allowing a very high degree of parallelism, efficient communication between processor cores, memories, accelerators and I/O interfaces, minimized data memory requirements and efficient memory accesses.
LeoCore system advantages
We provide the semiconductor IP for our LeoCore solution in two main elements: the hardware core design and the protocol specific firmware supporting this.
The combination of these elements enables a wide range of wireless standards to be supported in a mobile device, including WiMAX, LTE, UMB, DVB-T/H, ISDB-T, T-DMB, DAB, DAB+, HD radio, WLAN 802.11a/b/g, 3G/4G, Bluetooth 1 and EDR, and many more.
Coresonic’s unique flexibility is realized in the firmware:
- The flexibility provided accelerates your time to market in deploying 4G (WiMAX, LTE or UMB) solutions; as the standards evolve, a simple firmware update keeps you ahead of the market, and the ability to support ‘in field’ updates allows efficient support.
- Our efficient instruction set dramatically reduces program size which in turn allows for several different standards to be in memory simultaneously, enabling rapid switching between standards.
- There is a dramatic increase in the combinations of standards that 4G handsets will have to support – multi-standard flexibility enables you to launch cost effective integrated solutions earlier, whilst limiting market risk.
- The firmware layer accelerates developments by providing an interface at layer 1 of the protocol stack – enabling rapid integration with existing developments.
The hardware core is customized by Coresonic’s team to support a specific set of standards:
- By providing the appropriate set of modules and acceleration for the protocols involved we can optimize your trade off between flexibility and cost.
- Dramatically reduce hardware development times by providing a solution that has the performance for 4G solutions.
- Small die area due to hardware reuse (multiplexing): minimizing of both memory requirements and memory accesses, low control overhead, and hardware acceleration of selected functions all lead directly to our lower power consumption and low silicon cost.
- Easy interface to industry standard MCU/applications processors enables efficient development with your existing solutions, and minimal impact to your code base.
